HERE'S WHERE THE 2020 DEMOCRATS STAND IN IOWA AHEAD OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION'S FIRST CAUCUS

The all-important Iowa caucus—the first official contest of the 2020 presidential election—is just days away but the polls show that it is still anyone's race.

Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have been wrestling for the top spot in the battleground state for months. The latest Monmouth University poll of likely Iowa caucusgoers shows the group all bunched together less than a week from Monday's event.

Former Vice President Biden narrowly lead the field of Democratic candidates with 23 percent support from likely caucusgoers. Sanders was not far behind with 21 percent support. Buttigieg placed third with 16 percent support and Warren rounded out the top tier with 15 percent support.

One of the most important takeaways from the survey is that all four candidates are above the state's 15 percent viability threshold. In Iowa, a candidate needs to get at least 15 percent of the votes in the first round of the caucus to move on to the final count, which is how the state's delegates will be distributed.

The results from the latest Monmouth poll were nearly the same as the university's survey of Iowa caucusgoers from earlier this month. Two weeks ago, the survey showed Biden at 24 percent support, Sanders at 18 percent, Buttigieg at 17 percent and Warren with 15 percent.

But the latest poll also showed that voters are far from sold on any one candidate. About half of likely caucusgoers surveyed (45 percent) said they were still open to changing their minds when they show up to vote on Monday.

That's good news for candidates like Biden and Warren, who are the second choice candidate for most Iowa voters. Thirty-nine percent of those polled said Biden was their second choice pick and 34 percent said Warren would be their second choice.

The Monmouth University poll was conducted from January 23 to January 27 and surveyed 544 likely Iowa Democratic caucus-goers. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden speaks during a campaign event at The Grass Wagon January 29, 2020 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Polling shows Biden with a narrow lead over his 2020 competitors in the most competitive contest of the 2020 election so far.

Just outside the leading pack of candidates is Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. According to the Monmouth poll, 10 percent of likely Iowa caucusgoers would back her bid for president. That's a 2 percent increase from two weeks ago and a 7 percent increase from August 2019.

"This person deserves a ticket out of Iowa, to be able to go forward, and I am asking you to do that for me," Klobuchar said to state voters over the weekend. It was one of the final pitches the senator could make to likely voters, as she has to be in Washington D.C. to serve as a juror in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.

But there is the possibility that Klobuchar could receive a boost in Iowa from Biden. The New York Times reported earlier this week that the former vice president's team has floated the possibility of teaming up Klobuchar's campaign ahead of the first caucus vote. The plan would be to help each other in precincts where one of them doesn't have enough support to win. But the senator's campaign allegedly expressed no interest in the proposal.

The outliers in the Iowa race include Michael Bennet, Tulsi Gabbard, Tom Steyer and Andrew Yang. Steyer leads the pack with 4 percent support according to Monmouth University, followed by Yang at 3 percent and Bennet and Gabbard at 1 percent.

The Iowa caucuses will take place at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, February 3.
